Cosequin alternatives for dogs: how to compare joint chews fairly

A fair Cosequin alternative should be judged on the same five things: mg of each active per chew, chews per day for your dog's weight, cost per day, flavor and allergens, and subscription terms. Cosequin has a long track record and wide vet use, so switch for a specific reason, and talk to your vet first.
| Cosequin MSM + Omega-3 soft chew | 600 mg glucosamine, 300 mg chondroitin, 400 mg MSM, 70 mg omega-3 |
|---|---|
| Dasuquin adds | ASU, boswellia and green tea extract |
| GoodYears Mobility chew | 500 mg glucosamine, 110 mg chondroitin, 400 mg MSM, 150 mg green-lipped mussel |
| Compare by | Daily amount and cost per day, not per chew |
Why do owners look for a Cosequin alternative?
Most owners who search for an alternative are not unhappy with Cosequin in principle. They have a practical problem. Across joint chew listings on Chewy, the same few themes come up again and again:
- The dog stops eating it. Some reviewers on Cosequin's Chewy listing say their dog ate the chews at first, then lost interest, and mention a strong smell (Chewy). Refusal comes up in reviews of many joint chew brands, including Dasuquin (Chewy).
- Cost for big dogs. Large dogs need more chews per day, and owners notice how fast a container empties. One GlycoFlex reviewer put it simply: a large dog needs 3 to 4 chews a day, so the bag does not last (Chewy).
- Allergies and flavor. Owners of dogs with chicken or beef allergies want to know exactly what is in the flavoring. One Dasuquin reviewer describes a reaction in a dog with those allergies (Chewy).
- Autoship. Some owners would rather buy once than manage a subscription.
What does Cosequin do well?
Cosequin is the default for a reason, and a fair comparison starts there.
- A long track record. Nutramax says Cosequin has supported joint health in dogs "for over 25 years" (cosequin.com), and the company has made supplements since 1992 (Nutramax).
- Wide use by vets. Nutramax says Cosequin is the retail joint supplement brand that small animal vets recommend most, based on its own survey of vets who recommend oral joint supplements (cosequin.com). A vet answering an owner on Dogster named Cosequin among the most widely studied and quality-controlled formulations (Dogster), and PetMD lists Cosequin Maximum Strength among good glucosamine products for dogs (PetMD).
- Its own research program. Nutramax says it conducts and supports laboratory research and clinical studies, many published in veterinary and health journals (Nutramax), and that it manufactures in its own US facilities under cGMP (Nutramax).
- Owner trust. On Reddit, Cosequin and Dasuquin are among the most discussed joint products (GummySearch).
- Generous amounts per chew. The Maximum Strength with MSM Plus Omega-3 soft chew lists 600 mg glucosamine HCl, 300 mg chondroitin sulfate, 400 mg MSM and 70 mg total omega-3 per chew (cosequin.com).
How do you compare joint chews fairly?
Compare daily amounts and daily cost for your dog's weight, not the front of the bag.
Use this checklist with any product, including ours.
| What to check | Why it matters | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| mg of each active per chew | Some listings show no mg at all | Label, "active ingredients" panel |
| Chews per day for your dog's weight | Turns per-chew numbers into a daily amount | Label directions |
| Loading vs maintenance phase | Changes both the daily amount and cost after 4 to 6 weeks | Label directions |
| Cost per day | The only fair price comparison | Price รท count ร chews per day |
| Flavor and full inactive list | "Natural flavor" does not name its source | Inactive or other ingredients |
| Shellfish, soy, grains | Common reasons to rule a chew out | Active and inactive lists |
| Form and size | Soft chew, tablet or powder; some dogs refuse one form | Listing, Q&A |
| Subscription terms | Skip, pause and cancel rules vary | Checkout and terms pages |
Our joint chew label checklist walks through each of these in more detail.
Here is the cost math, using Cosequin's own directions and the Chewy price for its 240-count soft chews on October 20, 2026 ($79.98, about $0.33 a chew; autoship is lower) (Chewy). Prices change, so redo this with today's numbers.
| Dog weight | Cosequin chews/day, first 4 to 6 weeks | Cosequin chews/day, after | Cosequin cost/day, first weeks | Cosequin cost/day, after |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 to 29 lb | 1 | 1 every other day | about $0.33 | about $0.17 |
| 30 to 59 lb | 2 | 1 | about $0.67 | about $0.33 |
| 60 lb and over | 3 | 1 to 2 | about $1.00 | about $0.33 to $0.67 |
Directions from cosequin.com. For dogs under 10 lb, Nutramax points to its small-dog product.
Cosequin's maintenance phase makes it inexpensive per day for many dogs. If cost is your only reason to switch, run these numbers first: you may find you are already on one of the lower-cost options.
Dasuquin vs Cosequin: what is the difference?
Dasuquin is Nutramax's other joint line. Both use glucosamine and chondroitin. According to its label, Dasuquin adds avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASU), Boswellia serrata extract and green tea extract (dasuquin.com).
| Per soft chew | Cosequin MSM + Omega-3 | Dasuquin, small/medium | Dasuquin, large |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glucosamine HCl | 600 mg | 600 mg | 900 mg |
| Chondroitin sulfate | 300 mg | 250 mg | 350 mg |
| MSM | 400 mg | None (400 mg in the MSM version) | None (800 mg in the MSM version) |
| ASU powder | None | 45 mg | 90 mg |
| Omega-3 | 70 mg | None (60 mg in the MSM version) | None (90 mg in the MSM version) |
| Boswellia / green tea | None | 20 mg / 16 mg | 40 mg / 32 mg |

Dasuquin's soft chews also list soy protein isolate among their other ingredients (dasuquin.com). A vet Q&A site notes that Cosequin is usually less expensive and that some dogs are sensitive to the soy in Dasuquin (TheVetDesk). Chewy's answer to an owner switching from Cosequin to Dasuquin was that no new loading dose is needed, since Dasuquin contains Cosequin's actives plus ASU (Chewy).
We are not aware of a published head-to-head trial in dogs comparing these products, and ours has not been tested in one. For what the ingredient research shows overall, see our guide to what dog joint supplement research actually shows.
Where does GoodYears Mobility fit?
GoodYears Mobility is a different stack, not a copy. Per 4 g chew it has 500 mg glucosamine HCl, 400 mg MSM, 150 mg green-lipped mussel and 110 mg chondroitin, plus vitamin C and manganese. It is duck-flavored and contains no fish oil.
Side by side with Cosequin's soft chew, be clear on the trade-offs:
- Mobility adds green-lipped mussel, which Cosequin does not contain. Our amount is complementary and below the amounts used in studies. We explain that openly in why GoodYears Mobility contains these amounts.
- MSM is the same 400 mg per chew in both.
- Cosequin has more glucosamine and much more chondroitin per chew, and it contains omega-3. Mobility has none.
- Allergens: Mobility contains shellfish (shrimp, crab and mussel), oat and rye flour, and soy lecithin. If your dog reacts to any of those, it is not the right switch.
Mobility's label has no loading phase: 1 chew up to 15 lb, 2 for 15 to 45 lb, 3 for 45 to 75 lb and 4 over 75 lb. Here is the cost per day:
| Dog weight | Chews/day | 1 jar ($34) | 3 jars ($68) | 5 jars ($102) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 15 lb | 1 | $0.57 | $0.38 | $0.34 |
| 15 to 45 lb | 2 | $1.13 | $0.76 | $0.68 |
| 45 to 75 lb | 3 | $1.70 | $1.13 | $1.02 |
| Over 75 lb | 4 | $2.27 | $1.51 | $1.36 |
Even at the 5-jar price, that is close to or above Cosequin's first 4 to 6 weeks at Chewy's listed price, and above its maintenance phase. What you get instead is a different formula, a duck flavor, no subscription, free US shipping and a 90-day money-back guarantee from delivery. GoodYears Mobility is made in the USA and is on founding batch pre-order: a 30% deposit now, the balance when your order ships, by February 2027.

How should you switch safely?
Talk to your vet before you switch, and bring the labels of both products. Ask about the changeover in particular if your dog is in Cosequin's initial phase, takes medication such as NSAIDs, blood thinners or insulin, is pregnant or used for breeding, or has food allergies. Skip shellfish-based chews entirely for a dog with a shellfish allergy.
Introduce any new chew gradually and watch for stomach upset.
What to do next
- Write down why you want to switch: refusal, cost, allergens or subscription. Compare only on that.
- Fill in the comparison table above with today's prices and your dog's weight.
- Note how your dog gets up, handles stairs and walks now, and give any new chew at least a month: CARE says not to expect changes from oral joint supplements before then (CARE). Our guide on how long joint supplements take to work explains the timing.
- Check your dog's daily amount on the daily amounts FAQ and take both labels to your vet.
Questions owners ask
What is better than Cosequin for dogs?
We are not aware of a published head-to-head canine trial showing any product is better than Cosequin, and that includes ours. The better choice is the one that fits your dog: a flavor your dog will eat, no ingredients your dog reacts to, a daily amount that suits its weight, and a cost you can keep up. Your vet can help you weigh those for your dog.
Is there a cheaper alternative to Cosequin?
Compare cost per day, not price per jar. On Chewy's October 2026 listing, Cosequin's 240-count soft chews worked out to about $0.33 a chew, and the label drops to a lower maintenance amount after 4 to 6 weeks. For many dogs that is hard to undercut. GoodYears Mobility costs $0.34 to $0.57 a chew depending on bundle size, at 1 to 4 chews a day.
What is the difference between Dasuquin and Cosequin?
Both are Nutramax products built on glucosamine and chondroitin. Dasuquin adds avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASU), boswellia and green tea extract, according to its label. Its soft chews also list soy protein isolate among the other ingredients, which matters if your dog is soy-sensitive. A vet Q&A site notes that Cosequin is usually less expensive.
Do I need a loading dose when switching from Cosequin?
It depends on the product you switch to. Cosequin's label uses a higher amount for the first 4 to 6 weeks. GoodYears Mobility's label has no separate loading phase: it is 1 to 4 chews a day by weight. Ask your vet how to handle the changeover, especially if your dog has been on Cosequin for a long time.
My dog refuses Cosequin. What should I try?
First check the chew is fresh and try it in a little food or broken into pieces. If your dog still refuses, a chew with a different flavor and texture is a reasonable next step. Read the full ingredient list, not just the flavor name, and introduce the new chew gradually. If your dog starts refusing food in general, see your vet.
How long before I can tell if a new joint chew is working?
Give it time. Canine Arthritis Resources and Education (CARE) says not to expect changes from oral joint supplements before about a month, and mussel effects in studies appeared at around two months. Note how your dog gets up, handles stairs and walks before you switch, so you have something to compare with.
