Why GoodYears Mobility contains these amounts: ingredients and dosage explained

Each 4 g GoodYears Mobility chew has 500 mg glucosamine HCl, 400 mg MSM, 150 mg green-lipped mussel and 110 mg chondroitin, plus vitamin C and manganese. Glucosamine is the dose-led ingredient and sits above a commonly cited maintenance figure. Chondroitin is modest for large dogs, and the mussel is a complementary amount, well below study doses.
| Glucosamine HCl per chew | 500 mg (shrimp and crab) |
|---|---|
| Green-lipped mussel per chew | 150 mg (150 to 600 mg/day at label dose) |
| Chondroitin sulfate per chew | 110 mg (porcine) |
| Chews per day | 1 to 4, by weight |
| Contains | Shellfish, oat and rye flour, soy lecithin |
What is in each GoodYears Mobility chew?
GoodYears Mobility is a four-ingredient joint chew, plus vitamin C and manganese. Each chew weighs 4 g and is duck-flavored. Here is everything active in it, per chew and per day at the label dose.
| Dog weight | Chews a day | Glucosamine HCl | MSM | Green-lipped mussel | Chondroitin | One jar lasts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 15 lbs | 1 | 500 mg | 400 mg | 150 mg | 110 mg | 60 days |
| 15 to 45 lbs | 2 | 1,000 mg | 800 mg | 300 mg | 220 mg | 30 days |
| 45 to 75 lbs | 3 | 1,500 mg | 1,200 mg | 450 mg | 330 mg | 20 days |
| Over 75 lbs | 4 | 2,000 mg | 1,600 mg | 600 mg | 440 mg | 15 days |
Daily amounts at the label dose of GoodYears Mobility (per chew: glucosamine HCl 500 mg, MSM 400 mg, green-lipped mussel 150 mg, chondroitin sulfate 110 mg). Contains shellfish. Check with your vet first if your dog takes any medication.
| Ingredient | Per 4 g chew | Source or form |
|---|---|---|
| Glucosamine HCl | 500 mg | Shrimp and crab |
| MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) | 400 mg | |
| Green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) | 150 mg | Shellfish |
| Chondroitin sulfate | 110 mg | Porcine |
| Vitamin C | 20 mg | |
| Manganese | 2.5 mg | Manganese proteinate |
The label dose is 1 chew a day up to 15 lb, 2 for 15 to 45 lb, 3 for 45 to 75 lb and 4 over 75 lb. If your dog gets more than one, split them between morning and evening. You can check your dog's band on the daily amounts FAQ.
We publish this page because many joint chews do not show mg per chew at all.
We would rather you judge our amounts with the numbers in front of you.
How do these amounts compare with what research used?
To compare across dog sizes, you need milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day. The formula is simple:
mg per kg per day = mg per chew × chews per day ÷ (weight in lb ÷ 2.2046)
| Dog weight | Chews/day | Glucosamine | Chondroitin | MSM | Green-lipped mussel | Mussel at 77 mg/kg would be |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 lb (4.5 kg) | 1 | 500 mg (110 mg/kg) | 110 mg (24 mg/kg) | 400 mg (88 mg/kg) | 150 mg (33 mg/kg) | about 350 mg |
| 30 lb (13.6 kg) | 2 | 1,000 mg (73 mg/kg) | 220 mg (16 mg/kg) | 800 mg (59 mg/kg) | 300 mg (22 mg/kg) | about 1,050 mg |
| 60 lb (27.2 kg) | 3 | 1,500 mg (55 mg/kg) | 330 mg (12 mg/kg) | 1,200 mg (44 mg/kg) | 450 mg (17 mg/kg) | about 2,100 mg |
| 100 lb (45.4 kg) | 4 | 2,000 mg (44 mg/kg) | 440 mg (10 mg/kg) | 1,600 mg (35 mg/kg) | 600 mg (13 mg/kg) | about 3,500 mg |
Calculated from the GoodYears label at 1 kg = 2.2046 lb, rounded.
Now each ingredient, plainly.
Glucosamine is the dose-led ingredient. A commonly cited maintenance figure is about 15 mg/kg a day, from veterinarian Matt Brunke, quoted in dvm360. That is a single source, and no universal dosing standard exists, as Cornell notes. At the label dose, Mobility gives roughly 44 to 110 mg/kg across the weights above, so it sits at or above that figure for every size of dog.
Chondroitin is modest for large dogs. The same dvm360 article doses chondroitin like glucosamine when it is given alone. Mobility reaches about 15 mg/kg or more for most dogs up to around 30 lb. For a 60 to 100 lb dog it is closer to 10 to 12 mg/kg.
Green-lipped mussel is a complementary amount, well below study doses. A commonly cited figure is 77 mg/kg a day, attributed to Cornell and dvm360. A 2009 trial of 45 dogs used a branded mussel extract at 20 to 49 mg/kg a day for 10 days, then half that (Hielm-Björkman et al.).
PetMD suggests about 500 mg a day for small dogs up to 1,000 mg for large ones. Mobility gives 150 to 600 mg a day, or about 13 to 33 mg/kg across the weights in the table.
Study products were also specific extracts, so any generic comparison is only a rough guide. Our mussel amount does not match the studies, and we do not suggest it does.
MSM has no canine efficacy research. Brunke, quoted in dvm360, says there has been "no published research" on MSM in dogs (dvm360). A 2022 meta-analysis of 72 trials found MSM only inside multi-ingredient products, so its own effect could not be separated (Barbeau-Grégoire et al.).
Cornell lists it only as a common ingredient. The mg/kg figures above are there so you can see what your dog gets, not because there is a canine target to hit.
What does the wider evidence say about these ingredients?
The honest summary is modest. A 2012 systematic review of 22 papers rated the evidence low for every nutraceutical except omega-3 in dogs (Vandeweerd et al.). Mobility contains no omega-3 or fish oil.
For glucosamine and chondroitin, the 2022 meta-analysis found that 88.9% of trials showed no effect on pain (Barbeau-Grégoire et al.). A 2017 review found the evidence limited and conflicting, and hard to read partly because studies used different salt forms and doses (Bhathal et al.). In a 2003 trial of 71 dogs with osteoarthritis, a glucosamine, chondroitin and manganese product did not improve force-plate gait (Moreau et al.).
Green-lipped mussel has somewhat better results. In a 2006 trial of 81 dogs with presumed joint disease, owners reported more improvement at day 56 with mussel than placebo, but there was no difference at day 28 (Pollard et al.). A dvm360 article notes that "studies do not demonstrate consistent improvement."
Nearly all of these trials enrolled dogs already diagnosed with joint disease. None tested GoodYears Mobility. For the full picture, read our guide to what the research on dog joint supplements actually shows, or compare the two main ingredients in glucosamine vs green-lipped mussel.
Why can a chew only hold so much?
A soft chew is a small object. Each Mobility chew weighs 4 g, and its actives add up to about 1,180 mg, close to 30% of the chew's weight. The rest is the chew itself: the base that holds it together, the flavor and the texture that makes a dog willing to eat it every day.
The arithmetic shows the trade-off. Reaching 77 mg/kg of green-lipped mussel for a 60 lb dog would take about 2,100 mg a day. At 150 mg per chew, that is 14 chews. Any ingredient you raise takes space from another, or adds chews to your dog's day.
So we chose to lead with glucosamine, and to include mussel, chondroitin and MSM at the amounts that fit a 1 to 4 chew routine. If you want a study-level mussel amount for your dog, a separate mussel product chosen with your vet is the straightforward route. Our glucosamine dose by weight guide covers the glucosamine side in more depth.
What do we not claim?
- We make no disease claims. Mobility is a daily supplement chew, not a medicine, and it does not replace veterinary care.
- We do not claim our mussel amount matches the amounts used in studies.
- We do not claim MSM has proven benefits in dogs.
- We do not claim the formula itself has been studied. It has not.
- We do not claim glucosamine HCl is better than glucosamine sulfate. AKC notes human data favor sulfate, a point that rests on one source and on people, not dogs.
What we do say: Mobility is a daily chew that supports joint health, mobility and comfort, with every amount on this page.
What allergens are in the chew?
Read this section before you order.
- Shellfish. The glucosamine comes from shrimp and crab, and green-lipped mussel is a shellfish. PetMD advises avoiding both in dogs with a shellfish allergy.
- Oat flour and rye flour. Both are in the chew base.
- Soy lecithin. Also in the chew base.
- Pork-derived chondroitin. Our chondroitin is porcine.
- Duck flavor. The chews are duck-flavored. If your dog has a food allergy, a flavor name alone does not tell you everything, so take the full ingredient list to your vet.
The main side effect VCA lists for glucosamine-type supplements is mild stomach upset. Stop and call your vet if you see signs of an allergic reaction (VCA).
How should you use this page with your vet?
Bring it. Print it or pull it up on your phone at the appointment. It gives your vet the amounts per chew, per day and per kg in one place, which is what they need to judge whether Mobility fits your dog.
Talk to your vet before starting if your dog:
- takes medication, especially NSAIDs, blood thinners or insulin
- is pregnant or used for breeding
- has a known shellfish or food allergy

Questions owners ask
How much green-lipped mussel is in a GoodYears Mobility chew?
150 mg per chew, so 150 to 600 mg a day at the label dose of 1 to 4 chews. That is below the amounts used in canine studies and below the commonly cited figure of 77 mg per kg per day, attributed to Cornell and dvm360. For a 60 lb dog, that figure works out to about 2,100 mg a day. We include mussel as a complement to glucosamine, not as the lead ingredient.
How many GoodYears Mobility chews should a 70 lb dog get?
Three a day. The label dose is 1 chew for dogs up to 15 lb, 2 for 15 to 45 lb, 3 for 45 to 75 lb and 4 for dogs over 75 lb. If your dog gets more than one, split them between morning and evening. A 60-chew jar lasts a 70 lb dog 20 days. There is no separate loading phase on the label.
Can I give my dog more chews than the label says?
Do not go above the label amount unless your vet tells you to. More chews means more of every ingredient at once, including MSM and chondroitin, and stomach upset is the main side effect VCA lists for these ingredients. If you think your dog needs a higher glucosamine or mussel amount, ask your vet what to add and how much.
Is glucosamine HCl as good as glucosamine sulfate?
Nobody can say for dogs. AKC notes that human research tends to favor the sulfate form, but that is one source and it concerns people, not dogs. Canine trials have used both forms, and reviewers say mixed salt forms are one reason the glucosamine evidence is hard to read. GoodYears Mobility uses glucosamine HCl, and we would rather tell you that than leave it off.
My dog has a shellfish allergy. Can he take GoodYears Mobility?
No. Our glucosamine is made from shrimp and crab, and green-lipped mussel is itself a shellfish. PetMD advises avoiding both ingredients in dogs with a shellfish allergy. The chew also contains oat flour, rye flour and soy lecithin. If your dog has food allergies, show your vet the full ingredient list before you order.
What if GoodYears Mobility is not right for my dog?
You have a 90-day money-back guarantee, counted from delivery. There is no subscription to cancel: you order a jar or a bundle once. Founding batch orders take a 30% deposit now, and the balance is charged only when your order ships, by February 2027.
